Seabass’ Diary…Day 139…Free at Last

April 3, 2017-Sirens screamed, and I held my paws over my ears. The henchman lunged forward as he tried to plunge the knife into me but I rolled from one side to the other to escape the danger.

Suddenly there was a voice on a loudspeaker, “PUT YOUR HANDS UP!” it boomed. We were surrounded by what I hoped was the real police. Part of me was relieved, and the other part of me was still untrusting. We had been through so much with fake police and fake SWAT that I didn’t know what to believe, and it was hard to distinguish between the two.

The henchman who stood above me dropped his knife as several police officers swarmed him like bees. Another officer picked me up and brought me to the ambulance that was waiting with the doors open. I saw the small, stupid human, the large, stupid human, Simba, and Bernard who were being treated for injuries. I let out a sigh of relief as I collapsed into the arms of the small, stupid human. “It’s ok Seabass, everything is going to be ok,” she said and I wanted to believe her.

It was finally over, finally time to go back to the prison and get back to a seemingly normal life. Too much adventure was never a good thing and I felt as though we had been consumed by it for months.

The police came to the back of the ambulance and asked my humans a few questions. We were all being released and cleared to go back home. I looked over at the police cars and several henchmen were in handcuffs and pushed up against the outside of the cruisers. I looked again and silently calculated the arrested men. There was one problem…the tall, thin woman was missing from the group.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 138…Almost Free…

March 27, 2017-“Why do I have to do EVERYTHING?” the tall, thin woman screamed. She continued running toward us, and by this point, the large, stupid human had defeated his captor. The henchman was laying unconscious on the gravel, but there was still one to contend with. The man tried to grab for me again, but once again I bit down on him as hard as I could while Simba bit his ankle and Bernard broke free of the muzzle.

“Get him, Bernard!” I screamed as he charged at the henchman and knocked the wind out of him as he fell to the ground in a massive heap. Bernard dragged him by the coat cuff and whipped the man’s arms around viciously. He growled and snarled and spat slobber that washed over the henchman’s face. The tall, thin woman loomed over me with a huge stick. She swung it wildly, but I was able to roll out of the way just in time.

In the distance, I saw the large, stupid human grab a knife from the henchman’s utility belt and cut himself free of his restraints. He took the knife and ran towards the small, stupid human. The tall, thin woman swung at me again and missed as I rolled in the opposite direction. I knew that I couldn’t keep her at bay much longer. Bernard gnashed his teeth but couldn’t get near the stick that separated him and the tall, thin woman.

I looked for Simba but couldn’t find him. I needed him now more than ever. The henchman that was unconscious sprung to his feet and reached for his knife. “Let me do away with this one!” he said. “It’d be my pleasure,” he snarled at me.

I heard sirens in the distance. If I could hold on until they got to us, we would be saved! I was still underneath the van when I heard something up above me. Within seconds the van roared to life and suddenly my hiding place was compromised.

Seabass’ Diary …Day 137…Struggle

March 20, 2017- (Forgive me for missing last weeks post! I was in London England at the London Book Fair and while it was wonderful, I’m glad to be back home. Without further adieu…)

My heart almost stopped at the sight of her.  She was surrounded by hired henchmen and was fighting with all of her might to free herself but it was no use. The tall, thin human let out a laugh and I wanted to destroy her.

“Oh dear!  Look at the petulant soul, trying to free herself to no avail!” she chirped delightedly. She glanced at us and smiled.

I pulled with all of my strength on my restraints once more but there was no chance of getting free of them. I had a plan and I prayed that it was going to work. I looked at Bernard and saw that he had been muzzled upon capture but luckily they didn’t think to do the same when it came to me. The van pulled up close to the back door and the tall, thin human jumped out and made her way over to the small, stupid human. The small, stupid human writhed in anger as the tall, thin human yanked her head back by her ponytail.

I hated to see her like this and swore revenge on her behalf. I looked at Simba and he looked back at me as if to read my mind. The van doors flung open and one of the henchmen reached for me, the large, stupid human head-butted him and broke his nose in the process! Blood rushed down his face and the henchman fell backward onto the gravel as he clutched his mouth and nose.

“You’ll pay for that!” another one of the henchmen promised.

He lunged at the large, stupid human and wrestled him to the ground. Someone reached for me and I sunk my teeth into their flesh and bit down as hard as I could. I was released with a scream. The henchman swore loudly and tried to stuff me into a duffle bag. I wouldn’t have it and if I had to spend my last minutes on this earth putting up a fight, so be it. Until the bitter end, I was committed to going down swinging.

I managed to roll myself off of the van floor and onto the gravel driveway. I growled and spit with all of my might and I could tell that my captor was afraid. Simba and Bernard followed my lead and did the same.

I looked for the large, stupid human and he was still fighting to get free of his restraints. I could see that the tall, thin human was racing in our direction and her face was twisted with fury.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 135…It’s Over…

February 27, 2017-The door to the van slammed shut and we were immediately swarmed by the S.W.A.T team. I knew that this was a bad idea and felt sick to my stomach when I looked at the large, stupid human. He had been struck in the face and blood trickled down his forehead, three men tied his arms behind his back and his feet together. He flailed his limbs to break free but couldn’t. There were too many of them. I was restrained by two men and tried to bite at them as they hog-tied me, it was useless because I couldn’t reach them. They did the same to Bernard and Simba as I watched on in horror.

I was restrained by two men and tried to bite at them as they hog-tied me, it was useless because I couldn’t reach them. They did the same to Bernard and Simba as I watched on in horror. One of the men in the S.W.A.T. vests spoke, “This is it. You have been beaten and there is no way that you’re to get to the small, stupid human in time to save her life.”

“No! NO! NO! NO!” the large, stupid human thundered. “This is NOT going to end this way!”

There was an icy laugh from the front seat of the van and my heart almost stopped when I recognized it. The tall thin woman.

“Now now, not to worry! We ARE taking you to her…because that way you can all be together when it ends and I can make absolutely certain that I’ve done away with ALL of you.”

Seabass’ Diary…Day 134…Gut Feeling

February 13, 2017- The black van came to a screeching halt and cornered us against the edge of the cliff. There was no way out but down and I knew that there was no possibility of diving off of it again. That just wasn’t going to happen. The door flung open and five men in black, bullet-proof vests with the letters S.W.A.T. written on them said, “Get in.”

I looked at the large, stupid human and a wave of suspicion washed over his face. I could tell that he didn’t know whether to believe them or if this was just another booby trap that the tall, thin woman and her henchmen had constructed to kidnap us and kill us.

The large, stupid human said what we were all thinking, “How am I supposed to know that you’re the cops? Took you long enough to get here by the way.”

One of the men fired back, “Listen, do you want to find your wife or not? By my calculations, we have about twelve minutes to get to her before they do…”

Another man in the S.W.A.T. vest said, “You’re going to have to trust us.”

Simba got into the van and then the large, stupid human and Bernard. I hesitated for a second because my guts told me that something was wrong.

“Seabass, GET IN NOW!” Simba ordered.

Everything in me was screaming for me to run but I did as I was told…as soon as I stepped foot in the van I immediately wished that I had listened to myself.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 99…Package

August 10, 2016-I put all of the items into my virtual shopping cart and clicked on express/same day shipping. The receipt said that my order would be here no later than five pm-that was going to be a bit of a problem because the stupid humans would not be gone yet. I took a deep breath and decided that I would cross that bridge when I came to it. I grabbed my voice recorder again and started making notes.

“5 p.m.-shipment arrives. 5:15 p.m unpack shipment. 5:20 p.m take a break. 5:30 p.m stare down the horrible squirrel that taunts me from the back yard.” Things were moving along quite swimmingly and I was pleased with my time management skills. I took a quick nap and dreamt of how satisfying it would be to use my new taser on the tall, thin human.

At precisely 5 p.m the prison front bell rang. I gritted my teeth and waited for the small, stupid human to answer it. I had no idea what my plan of distraction would be but it didn’t matter because I was incredibly good at thinking on my feet. I waited for the sound of her footsteps but they never came. The bell rang again…no answer. Was it possible that the small, stupid human and the large stupid, human were dead? I supposed anything was possible.

I peered through the front door mail slit and saw the Amazon’s truck drive away-my package sat on the stoop. I placed my hand on the prison door and was just about to open it when I heard a muffled sound behind me. I quickly slipped into the stairwell and hid in the shadows. I peeked around the banister-it was only Simba. “Good Morning, I trust you slept well?” I asked unassumingly. Simba rubbed his eyes and stretched, “Yes…what are you doing?” he said with a raised eyebrow. I smiled my best smile and said, “You don’t want to know.” For a split second he paused, “You’re right…” he said and turned on his heels and went back to the nest.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 85…Fire…

July 20, 2016-We heard another sound coming from behind us. Twigs snapped under the weight of whatever was coming our way. Grandpa motioned for me to hide so I concealed myself deep in the bushes and watched in fear as Grandpa confronted the noise.

It was the tall, thin human and Edgardo; they had found us by the light of our tiny fire. “What do you want?” Grandpa yelled as he lit the tip of a large branch on fire and used it as a torch. The tall, thin human took a step toward him but he waved the torch at her as a warning to keep her distance. “I’m here for the black cat,” she snarled, “He didn’t think that he would get away with the diamond did he?” Edgardo bared his teeth and started to growl. “He doesn’t have the diamond! It’s been turned over to the authorities and it’s only a matter of time before they find and arrest YOU!” Grandpa said. The fire that burned on the torch was no match for the anger that burned in his eyes.

I needed to do something! I lunged from the bushes and caught Edgardo completely by surprise; we grappled with each other and I bit him as hard as I could. He would not retreat so I bit him again; he yelped out in pain and finally I pinned him. I loomed over top of him, my chest heaved from the exertion of our fight and I said, “You will NEVER defeat me!” He looked into my eyes and said with a smirk, “Oh…but I already have.” I looked to Grandpa; he was lying in the dirt face down. The tall, thin human dragged him to the base of a tree and started tying him up. She bound his hands and legs and put him into a sitting position against the trunk and then grabbed the burning torch.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 82…Development…

July 15, 2016- I scanned the empty cave once over to make sure that my eyes were not deceiving me. I wished they had been because it would’ve been easier to take. A million thoughts ran through my mind and some worst case scenarios came into focus in my mind’s eye; What if the tall, thin human had captured them? What if she harmed them in some way? What if Simba had wandered out into the darkness to look for me and had gotten lost? What if….what if…what if?

I felt as though I was going to jump out of my skin at any moment. What I wouldn’t give to be back at the prison with Simba and the stupid humans. I snapped back to reality and did not let my mind wander anymore, it was of no use-I had a job to do! I swore that my promise to the animals and Simba would be fulfilled. Grandpa looked around the cave that was becoming darker by the minute and said, “I know why you led me here…this is where the animals and Simba were hiding. You’re a smart fish…I knew you would save them as soon as I saw it on the news.” He picked me up and petted my fur, “Let’s take this vest off.” He pulled the zipper down on my vest and noticed a green, blinking light in the darkness. “What in the…?” He said as he reached for the light and studied it. “It’s a GPS tracking device…no wonder they found your location…they were tracking you!” I swallowed hard and remembered something that chilled me to the bone…each of the animals at the pet hotel were wearing a collar…that had the same blinking, green light.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 79…Help is on the way…

July 12, 2016-I slunk deeper into the shadows and held my breath but it was no use-I had been spotted by the tall, thin human. At that moment I knew that there were only two choices: 1) Run back into the cave and hope that our group could wrestle the gun away from her or 2) Take her on a wild goose chase.

I decided on the latter and made a run for it! There was no way that I would lead her to the animals and there was no way that we would ever be captured by her again-I wouldn’t allow it! I heard her shout obscenities at me and bullets pinged into the rocks above my head…at least she was a horrible shot.

I ran as far away from the cavern as I could and led her up a mossy hill in the middle of the forest. I navigated my way through rocks and sticks and the tall, thin human was only meters behind me. She shot at me again as I skidded across a large log that had fallen across a stream. I lost my grip and fell into the stream! It was deeper than I thought and I was having trouble swimming-the current was carrying me away. I thrashed in the water and threw out my paws to grab onto something-anything that would stop me. The water continued to whisk me away and I saw the tall, thin human stop and watch. She shouted into her walkie-talkie, “He’s coming your way! Grab him!” I felt myself going under the water again and I couldn’t touch the bottom…it was no use, I would have to go with the current or drown.

I felt weak and tired from struggling. Just as my limbs started to cramp with exhaustion I felt a hand on the back of my neck. I was immobilized by the position and could not see who was lifting me out of the water-all I heard was a familiar voice say, “It’s okay Seabass! I’ve got you!” The voice sounded a lot like Grandpa’s.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 75…The Struggle..

July 6, 2016-I lunged at Edgardo and we collided into a tumbling mess on the rooftop.A tumbleweed of fur was the best way to describe the scene. I bit him on the jugular as hard as I could and he screamed in pain as I ran towards the ladder.  The tall, thin human was the first to descend the rooftop at lightning speed and I was right behind her until Edgardo grabbed me from behind and pushed me to the ground.

We continued to grapple and were unaware of how close we were to the edge of the rooftop! I could hear the tall, thin human screaming for Edgardo to get in the car but he seemed to pay no attention. He stood on top of me and had me pinned to the edge of the roof, his hands were around my neck and I looked below me to see a twenty story drop and the get away car.”First I’ll do away with you and then Simba! It will be a pleasure to see  his pain!” Edgardo said breathless. I squirmed beneath him with all of my might but I couldn’t break free and I was starting to feel sleepy. If he held on much longer I knew that I would be thrown over the edge of the building and land as a splatter on the pavement. I grabbed his hands and tried to force him off of me but I was starting to lose consciousness…before everything went black, Simba’s face flashed in front of my eyes and I regained my strength!

I snapped back to consciousness and pressed my feet into Edgardo’s abdomen. I pushed up as hard as I could and flipped him off of the rooftop! I quickly whipped around to see him fall at an astounding pace; I could hear his yelping as he got closer to the ground! I watched as adrenaline pumped through my veins and just before Edgardo was about to meet his final fate as a spot on the asphalt, Henri caught him in his arms!
