Seabass’ Diary…Day 139…Free at Last

April 3, 2017-Sirens screamed, and I held my paws over my ears. The henchman lunged forward as he tried to plunge the knife into me but I rolled from one side to the other to escape the danger.

Suddenly there was a voice on a loudspeaker, “PUT YOUR HANDS UP!” it boomed. We were surrounded by what I hoped was the real police. Part of me was relieved, and the other part of me was still untrusting. We had been through so much with fake police and fake SWAT that I didn’t know what to believe, and it was hard to distinguish between the two.

The henchman who stood above me dropped his knife as several police officers swarmed him like bees. Another officer picked me up and brought me to the ambulance that was waiting with the doors open. I saw the small, stupid human, the large, stupid human, Simba, and Bernard who were being treated for injuries. I let out a sigh of relief as I collapsed into the arms of the small, stupid human. “It’s ok Seabass, everything is going to be ok,” she said and I wanted to believe her.

It was finally over, finally time to go back to the prison and get back to a seemingly normal life. Too much adventure was never a good thing and I felt as though we had been consumed by it for months.

The police came to the back of the ambulance and asked my humans a few questions. We were all being released and cleared to go back home. I looked over at the police cars and several henchmen were in handcuffs and pushed up against the outside of the cruisers. I looked again and silently calculated the arrested men. There was one problem…the tall, thin woman was missing from the group.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 138…Almost Free…

March 27, 2017-“Why do I have to do EVERYTHING?” the tall, thin woman screamed. She continued running toward us, and by this point, the large, stupid human had defeated his captor. The henchman was laying unconscious on the gravel, but there was still one to contend with. The man tried to grab for me again, but once again I bit down on him as hard as I could while Simba bit his ankle and Bernard broke free of the muzzle.

“Get him, Bernard!” I screamed as he charged at the henchman and knocked the wind out of him as he fell to the ground in a massive heap. Bernard dragged him by the coat cuff and whipped the man’s arms around viciously. He growled and snarled and spat slobber that washed over the henchman’s face. The tall, thin woman loomed over me with a huge stick. She swung it wildly, but I was able to roll out of the way just in time.

In the distance, I saw the large, stupid human grab a knife from the henchman’s utility belt and cut himself free of his restraints. He took the knife and ran towards the small, stupid human. The tall, thin woman swung at me again and missed as I rolled in the opposite direction. I knew that I couldn’t keep her at bay much longer. Bernard gnashed his teeth but couldn’t get near the stick that separated him and the tall, thin woman.

I looked for Simba but couldn’t find him. I needed him now more than ever. The henchman that was unconscious sprung to his feet and reached for his knife. “Let me do away with this one!” he said. “It’d be my pleasure,” he snarled at me.

I heard sirens in the distance. If I could hold on until they got to us, we would be saved! I was still underneath the van when I heard something up above me. Within seconds the van roared to life and suddenly my hiding place was compromised.

Seabass’ Diary …Day 137…Struggle

March 20, 2017- (Forgive me for missing last weeks post! I was in London England at the London Book Fair and while it was wonderful, I’m glad to be back home. Without further adieu…)

My heart almost stopped at the sight of her.  She was surrounded by hired henchmen and was fighting with all of her might to free herself but it was no use. The tall, thin human let out a laugh and I wanted to destroy her.

“Oh dear!  Look at the petulant soul, trying to free herself to no avail!” she chirped delightedly. She glanced at us and smiled.

I pulled with all of my strength on my restraints once more but there was no chance of getting free of them. I had a plan and I prayed that it was going to work. I looked at Bernard and saw that he had been muzzled upon capture but luckily they didn’t think to do the same when it came to me. The van pulled up close to the back door and the tall, thin human jumped out and made her way over to the small, stupid human. The small, stupid human writhed in anger as the tall, thin human yanked her head back by her ponytail.

I hated to see her like this and swore revenge on her behalf. I looked at Simba and he looked back at me as if to read my mind. The van doors flung open and one of the henchmen reached for me, the large, stupid human head-butted him and broke his nose in the process! Blood rushed down his face and the henchman fell backward onto the gravel as he clutched his mouth and nose.

“You’ll pay for that!” another one of the henchmen promised.

He lunged at the large, stupid human and wrestled him to the ground. Someone reached for me and I sunk my teeth into their flesh and bit down as hard as I could. I was released with a scream. The henchman swore loudly and tried to stuff me into a duffle bag. I wouldn’t have it and if I had to spend my last minutes on this earth putting up a fight, so be it. Until the bitter end, I was committed to going down swinging.

I managed to roll myself off of the van floor and onto the gravel driveway. I growled and spit with all of my might and I could tell that my captor was afraid. Simba and Bernard followed my lead and did the same.

I looked for the large, stupid human and he was still fighting to get free of his restraints. I could see that the tall, thin human was racing in our direction and her face was twisted with fury.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 134…Gut Feeling

February 13, 2017- The black van came to a screeching halt and cornered us against the edge of the cliff. There was no way out but down and I knew that there was no possibility of diving off of it again. That just wasn’t going to happen. The door flung open and five men in black, bullet-proof vests with the letters S.W.A.T. written on them said, “Get in.”

I looked at the large, stupid human and a wave of suspicion washed over his face. I could tell that he didn’t know whether to believe them or if this was just another booby trap that the tall, thin woman and her henchmen had constructed to kidnap us and kill us.

The large, stupid human said what we were all thinking, “How am I supposed to know that you’re the cops? Took you long enough to get here by the way.”

One of the men fired back, “Listen, do you want to find your wife or not? By my calculations, we have about twelve minutes to get to her before they do…”

Another man in the S.W.A.T. vest said, “You’re going to have to trust us.”

Simba got into the van and then the large, stupid human and Bernard. I hesitated for a second because my guts told me that something was wrong.

“Seabass, GET IN NOW!” Simba ordered.

Everything in me was screaming for me to run but I did as I was told…as soon as I stepped foot in the van I immediately wished that I had listened to myself.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 133…

February 6, 2017-Bernard pushed the large, stupid human one more time with as much force as he could muster. There was a sudden spurt and sputter and with a giant gurgle the large, stupid human coughed and spat up water. He sat up and took a few deep breaths. Bernard had saved his life!

“What the…” the large, stupid human said as he looked at the state of us. He looked up at the rocky ledge and frantically pieced together what had happened.

“We’ve got to get out of here!” He said and began his ascent up the cliff. We followed closely behind and when we finally reached the top we looked around cautiously for the tall, thin human and her henchmen but they were nowhere to be found.

“We have to find her…it’s been too long!” the large, stupid human said of the small, stupid one. He was right, she had been missing for quite some time and I was even starting to worry about her safety.

“I bet she’s dead by now,” the large, stupid human said. His words shook my core. Dead. She couldn’t be. Was the tall, thin human capable of such a thing?

I shuddered at the thought and answered my own question. Yes. She was more than capable.

The large, stupid human squinted into the sun and there was a sudden screech of tires meeting pavement. Our heads whipped around and we were met with the sight of a black van.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 130…We Had No Choice…

January 16, 2017-I shook my head…”WHAT? A WHAT?”

Bernard didn’t answer and I took that as a bad sign. I turned toward the large human and saw that he was looking in his rearview mirror. He had obviously seen what we had because he was using four-letter-words at an increased, and louder frequency.

I looked behind us and the tall, thin human and her henchmen were gaining on us. Our stolen car weaved and accelerated into oncoming traffic and the tiny bit of strength I had left was barely enough to raise my paws to my eyes to cover them.

“HANG ON!” The large human said as he smashed the passenger side window with a hammer that was in the back seat. He turned his attention to his own window and opened it fully.

I released my paws from my eyes and grabbed onto Bernard for dear life! My eyes fluttered open for a split second only to see that we were in deep trouble and it was just ahead.

“What is he doing? WHAT IS HE DOING?” Bernard yelled as he shook me.

I turned my attention back to the front windshield and braced for impact. I knew exactly what was going to happen and it was about to go down in a split second.

The street we were on ended at a pier. Before I could tell Bernard that I loved him, the large human punched the gas and launched the car off of the end of the dock.

We hit the water with enormous force but I managed to hold my breath as we became fully submerged. My arms and legs flailed as I tried to find my way to the surface. The water was dark and murky and I wasn’t sure which way was up. I blinked a couple of times and found my way out of the flooded car window. I started to panic until I was finally pulled from the water.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 129…Reunited (Sort of)

January 9, 2017- I blinked hard a couple of times because tears pricked at the back of my eyes…It was Bernard! The big human flung open the door, let out a high pitched whistle and Bernard jumped into the front seat with us. The big human slammed the door shut and we continued to speed down the road at an alarming rate and made a few hairpin turns that made me queasy. I shifted my weight on the seat and turned my attention back to Bernard.

“I’m so glad you’re ok!” I said as I squeezed him as hard as I could.

“I thought you had exploded!”

He looked at me and with a raised eyebrow, “I would have exploded if I had listened to YOU and waited in the truck,” he said with a scowl.

“Well, I’m glad you didn’t bother listening to me…what happened exactly?” I asked.

“I don’t think this is really the time or the place to tell you,” he said as he looked out the back window and gulped.

“We’ve got bigger problems!”

I looked over my shoulder and noticed that the tall thin human’s henchman was pointing something out the window.

“What is that?” I whispered.

I glanced at Bernard and saw panic wash over his face. He was totally silent for a beat and it was if he snapped back into reality when I nudged him.

“That…” he paused “is a rocket launcher.”

Seabass’ Diary…Day 67…Truth

June 22, 2016-I bit onto Edgardo’s ear with all of my might and we rolled around on the floor as we swapped punches; I delivered a swift left hook to his jaw and pinned him to the ground. I stood ominously over top of him and sneered, “Know this…whatever you’re up to I plan to destroy it.” He breathed heavily and said, “Have it your way…but…what about Simba? You wouldn’t want him to suffer would you?”

Edgardo smirked and I went to attack again but was pulled off of him by a couple of his henchmen. “Listen up everyone!” Edgardo shouted as he smoothed his stupid sweatshirt, “Because of your new friend, Peasant, you will be working with no rest tonight.” The room suddenly went quiet and he continued, “Feel free to thank him in any way you see appropriate.” I could feel the angry eyes of the animals on my back and tried my best to ignore their deathly stares. The henchmen continued to restrain me until Edgardo left the room then they released me with a push.

When the coast was clear Callisto ran to my side, “Sebass that was so…brave and yet…so stupid, what were you thinking?” she asked. “I need you to tell me immediately what is going on-we don’t have much time!” I demanded. “Please Callisto, I need your help…to save Simba.” She looked at me and bowed her head, “I will help you all that I can.” She paused for a moment and said, “The animals here are involved in illegal activity but not by choice…we are all part of a massive crime ring.” I sucked in some air and waited for her next words…”We are jewel thieves,” she said, “And every night is a new mission…that’s why you…have become the Chosen One.”
