Seabass’ Diary…Day 149…Escape

June 19, 2017- “Quickly, there is no time!” Simba shouted as I scrunched my eyes together and waited for a second while they adjusted to the lack of light.

Simba’s chest heaved from the level of exertion we had just been through, “GO!” he yelled and pushed me down a sleek silver tunnel that was angled into a sharp drop. I hit the ground with a THUD and steadied myself at the bottom.

Simba followed right behind me, and when all of our feet hit the ground, he quickly gave orders.

“Help me push this! We need to barricade ourselves!” Simba commanded and started pushing a large wooden plank with all of his might. I got on the other end, and we covered the opening of the pipe we had just slid down.

“That was close. This should hold them!  Dog won’t fit, but if by chance Hugo decides to risk following us down the pipe, he won’t be able to slither back up. He’d be trapped until someone moved the pipe and who knows how long that would take.” Simba said.

I could sense a tiny bit of relief in his voice, but I was not relieved by any means. I was more afraid now than I had ever been. Something told me that we were not out of danger.

“Where are we?” I asked.

“We’re just at the end of the block…about four or five houses down from ours I think…in a basement,” he said.

“What?”

“We’re in somebody’s basement. It looks like they’re renovating and thankfully, it saved our lives,” Simba said.

“Whose house are we in?” I felt my breath shorten and my pulse quicken as I anticipated Simba’s answer.

“It was our only choice!” Simba said sternly, “I didn’t plan this!”

I swallowed hard and looked for an escape route. My voice caught in my throat when I realized that the only way out was up the staircase and through the central part of the house.

“Please tell me this isn’t her house,” I said and shuddered at the thought.

“It might very well be,” Simba said. “There is only one way to find out.”

Seabass’ Diary…Day 138…Almost Free…

March 27, 2017-“Why do I have to do EVERYTHING?” the tall, thin woman screamed. She continued running toward us, and by this point, the large, stupid human had defeated his captor. The henchman was laying unconscious on the gravel, but there was still one to contend with. The man tried to grab for me again, but once again I bit down on him as hard as I could while Simba bit his ankle and Bernard broke free of the muzzle.

“Get him, Bernard!” I screamed as he charged at the henchman and knocked the wind out of him as he fell to the ground in a massive heap. Bernard dragged him by the coat cuff and whipped the man’s arms around viciously. He growled and snarled and spat slobber that washed over the henchman’s face. The tall, thin woman loomed over me with a huge stick. She swung it wildly, but I was able to roll out of the way just in time.

In the distance, I saw the large, stupid human grab a knife from the henchman’s utility belt and cut himself free of his restraints. He took the knife and ran towards the small, stupid human. The tall, thin woman swung at me again and missed as I rolled in the opposite direction. I knew that I couldn’t keep her at bay much longer. Bernard gnashed his teeth but couldn’t get near the stick that separated him and the tall, thin woman.

I looked for Simba but couldn’t find him. I needed him now more than ever. The henchman that was unconscious sprung to his feet and reached for his knife. “Let me do away with this one!” he said. “It’d be my pleasure,” he snarled at me.

I heard sirens in the distance. If I could hold on until they got to us, we would be saved! I was still underneath the van when I heard something up above me. Within seconds the van roared to life and suddenly my hiding place was compromised.

Seabass’ Diary…Day 128…On the Run…

October 19, 2016- The intensity of the explosion caused us to fall to the ground. My immediate thoughts turned to Bernard. I prayed that he had not been done away with but at this point, the tall, thin woman was capable of anything. The stakes had become even higher than before.

I held onto the large human and he carried me like a football as we raced across the street. I wondered what was happening and I had a hard time finding my bearings. It was if he could read my mind because he said, “We need to get out of here NOW!” He threw his elbow through a driver’s side window and opened the locked door from the inside. He put me on the seat and pulled out a bunch of different coloured wires from under the steering wheel. I watched as he twisted a couple of the wires together and the engine roared to life.

He looked at me and said, “I hope Bernard is ok.” I shook my head and hoped for the best. We squealed out of the parking space and were followed by a barrage of black vehicles; it was the tall, thin woman and her henchmen, they were gaining on us. I could only focus on what was going on in front of us…it was all too much. It was as if my simple, quiet life had been turned upside down…I wanted things to go back to the way they were but I supposed that it could never happen.

I gathered the courage to look behind us as we raced down the street at breakneck speed when all of the sudden the car we had stolen came to a screeching halt and stopped dead in the middle of the road.
